Do this right away
- Get it out and power it offEven if it still works. Electricity plus water is what causes short circuits and corrosion.
- Do not charge itCharging a wet phone is the most common way a small water problem becomes a dead board.
- Remove the case and SIM trayWipe the outside with a dry cloth. Gently shake any water out of the ports.
- Bring it in as soon as you canThe sooner the inside is cleaned, the better the chance of saving the phone and your data.
What not to do
- Put it in rice — rice does not pull water out from inside, and rice dust can get stuck in the ports.
- Use a hair dryer or leave it in the sun — heat can damage the screen and battery.
- Keep switching it on to “test” it.
- Plug it in to see if it charges.
“It still works, so it’s fine?”
Not always. Water and minerals stay inside and keep corroding the board slowly. Many phones that “survived” stop working a week or two later. Salt water, sugary drinks and coffee are worse than tap water.
iPhones are water-resistant, not waterproof — the seal weakens over time, and after a screen or battery repair if the phone is not resealed properly.

No. Rice does not remove water from inside the phone. Power it off, don’t charge it, and bring it in.

As soon as possible — ideally the same day. Corrosion starts quickly and keeps going.
