Buying a Used iPhone? 8 Things to Check First
A cheap used iPhone is only a good deal if nothing is hiding inside. Check these before you pay.

The checklist
- Find My / Activation Lock is offThe seller must sign out of their Apple ID and erase the phone in front of you. If it is still locked, you cannot use it.
- Battery healthSettings › Battery › Battery Health & Charging. Around 80% or lower means it will need a new battery soon — factor that into the price.
- Parts & service historyOn supported models, Settings › General › About shows if parts like the screen or battery were replaced, and whether they are genuine.
- Face ID / Touch IDSet it up and test it. A dead Face ID is a common sign the phone was dropped, wet or badly repaired.
- ScreenLook for green lines, dead spots, uneven colour and touch problems. Check that True Tone is available in Settings › Display & Brightness.
- Cameras, speakers and microphoneTake photos with every lens, record a short video and make a call.
- Charging portPlug in a cable — it should charge without you having to hold it at an angle.
- Signs of water damageRust on the SIM tray or screws, fog under the camera glass, or the seller avoiding the question.

Above about 85% is a safe level. Around 80% or lower means you will likely need a battery replacement soon.
How do I know if a used iPhone has non-genuine parts?
On supported models, check Settings › General › About for parts and service history.
Can a locked iPhone be unlocked?
If Activation Lock is on, only the original owner can remove it. Don’t buy a locked iPhone.
