iPhone Not Charging? 6 Things to Check First

Before you pay for a repair, a few simple checks can save you a trip. If none of them help, here is what usually needs fixing.

Check these first

  1. Try another cable and adapterCables wear out at the ends. Try a cable and adapter you know works.
  2. Look inside the charging portPocket lint gets packed in over time. Power the phone off and gently remove it with a wooden toothpick — never metal.
  3. Read any alert on screenIf you see “Liquid Detected”, unplug it and let the phone dry. Do not keep charging a wet phone.
  4. Is it stopping at 80%?Newer iPhones can pause charging at 80% to protect the battery. Check Settings → Battery → Charging. This is normal.
  5. Restart the phoneA restart clears a stuck charging state more often than you would think.
  6. Check Battery HealthSettings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. A worn battery can drain as fast as it charges.

Signs it needs a repair

  • It only charges when the cable is held at an angle, or the cable feels loose.
  • Wireless charging works but the cable does not — usually the charging port.
  • The phone got wet before the problem started — corrosion inside can get worse each day.
  • The phone gets hot or shows 0% then dies — the battery or a charging part on the board.

My iPhone says “Liquid Detected”. Can I still charge it?

Unplug it and let it dry first. Charging a wet phone can cause corrosion. If the alert keeps coming back after it should be dry, bring it in for a free initial diagnosis (Visual Mechanical Inspection, VMI).

Wireless charging works but the cable does not. What is wrong?

Most of the time it is the charging port — dirt, wear or corrosion. The technician can tell after checking.

Will repairing the charging port delete my data?

Normally no, but please back up first if the phone still turns on.
