iPhone Says “Unknown Part”? What the Message Means
After a battery or screen replacement, some iPhones show a message that the part could not be verified as genuine. Here is what it means, and how to check your own phone.

What the message means
Newer iPhones check whether the battery, screen and some other parts are genuine Apple parts, installed and set up through Apple’s repair process. If the phone cannot confirm this, it shows a message such as “Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple battery”, and the part is listed as Unknown Part.
It does not mean the phone is broken. A high-quality replacement battery or screen still works normally — the phone is simply telling you it is not an Apple genuine part.
How to check your iPhone
- Open SettingsGo to Settings → General → About.
- Look for “Parts and Service History”This section only appears if a part has been replaced. If you don’t see it, no parts history is recorded.
- Read the statusGenuine Apple Part = an Apple genuine part set up through Apple’s process. Unknown Part = the phone cannot verify it.
Which should you choose?
- Don’t want any message, or plan to keep or resell the phone: choose an Apple genuine part. After the repair the record shows “Genuine”.
- Just want it fixed quickly and at a lower price: a high-quality part is fine — the message appears, but the part works normally.
